Frequently Asked Questions
Does the PTA just host fundraisers?
The PTA is focused on being a resource for students, parents, and teachers. Though it is essential that we raise funds each year to achieve our goals, fundraising makes up no more than one-third of the activities we coordinate. We host a variety of activities that are both fun for families and engaging for students that are either free or low-cost to all participants.
How much time do I have to commit to being a member of PTA?
Membership in PTA can involve as much or as little time as you have to offer. There is no wrong or right way to be involved – anything you can give, whether it’s time or money, will support your child’s potential.
Isn't PTA a social club for stay-at-home moms?
PTA is for everyone! Parents, guardians, students, teachers, grandparents, administrators, school board members, aunts, uncles, community members, etc. PTA membership is open, without discrimination, to anyone who believes in and supports the mission, purposes, and principles of PTA.
While some of the work done by PTA may appear purely social - including family engagement events that are organized to strengthen the school community - much of PTA's work focuses on funding essential school resources and curriculum needs, as well as advocating at the local, state, and national levels, impacting decisions affecting your child's health, safety, and quality of education.
How does PTA ensure it represents every child and family at the school?
We encourage every family in the school to become a PTA member to support the success of their child. We want a diverse membership base that reflects all of the families and needs of students at the school. PTA strengthens connections between your family, your child’s classmates and their families and teachers to build a thriving and inclusive community for everyone.
How much can I spend?
Our members must vote on and approve our budget in advance of expenditures. Contact the President or Treasurer for questions about your budget. If your committee needs to increase its budget, submit your request to the President. If your program generates revenue, the expense constraint will be determined by the revenue and resulting profit you expect to earn on your event. For class fund expenditures, please work with the Treasurer and Room Parent Coordinator to confirm your allocated budget, which must come from the available class funds.
How do I get reimbursed?
Keep all of your receipts and invoices! We can't reimburse anyone without an itemized receipt or invoice. Use the Expense Reimbursement Form to submit your reimbursement request to the Treasurer within 30 days after purchase (or the last day of school, whichever is sooner). Reimbursement requests that are not submitted within 30 days may not be reimbursed.
How long does it take to get reimbursed?
Please submit your receipts as soon as possible. The sooner you submit, the sooner the PTA can reimburse you. Typically, you will receive reimbursement in about two weeks.
Can a vendor be paid directly by the PTA?
Yes. If you have an invoice from a vendor, please complete the Disbursement Form and submit the itemized invoice. The check will be sent directly to the vendor by the PTA. If payment by check is not possible, please contact the Treasurer or President for assistance.
I'm already a member of the PTA at my other child's school. Can I be a member of multiple PTAs?
Yes! There is no limit to the number of PTAs you can support. In fact, your membership with our local PTA automatically makes you a member of the Virginia PTA and the National PTA.
If I join the PTA, do I need to volunteer?
If you want to volunteer, that's great. We absolutely NEED volunteers to be able to pull off the wonderful events we host all year. BUT your support as a member is enough; there is no requirement to volunteer. Membership can involve as much or as little time as you have to offer.
Does PTA membership expire?
You need to join every year. Even though membership runs annually from July through June, you can join anytime during the year.
If I join, do I have to participate in fundraisers?
You do not have to fundraise as a PTA member. When you join PTA, you are helping us to accomplish our mission - to make every child's potential a reality by engaging and empowering families to advocate for all children. Your PTA membership helps to make this happen - and you don't have to commit time or anything more when you join PTA - unless you want to! We always welcome the ways you feel you can help!
Why should I join PTA?
PTA offers all parents and caregivers the opportunity to be engaged in their child’s potential. Being a member of PTA means that you are part of a powerful association and action plan that is focused on programs and initiatives that strengthen your child’s education.
PTA membership and dues support your child by funding essential educational and curriculum needs; advocating on behalf of children and educators at the local, state and national levels; and building an inclusive school community for all families. Join PTA for your child because increasing our membership, even by one, makes it possible to provide important educational resources, speak up on important issues and create a stronger school community.
Where does my money go when I pay membership dues?
PTA dues directly support your child. PTA dues help fund enrichment activities, academic programs, staff support, and essential school needs. PTA dues also support advocacy efforts at the local, state and national levels, impacting decisions affecting your child’s health, safety and quality of education. PTA dues support our work to strengthen connections between your family, your child’s classmates and their families, and teachers to build a thriving and inclusive community for everyone.
